17th MFRU Transmedia Storytelling
18.–26. November 2011, Maribor, Slovenia
Transmedia storytelling signifies a method for telling stories throughvarious media platforms and formats. This is a phenomenon that is simultaneously part of the mass entertainment industry (e.g. realityshows with a TV and web platform; games with web based, mobile andphysical components) and simultaneously rooted in the expressive fieldand research field. In the political arena we are witness to protests thatare inseparable from social media usage. The wider context shows thatinformation constantly circulates among various media, while theboundary between user and author becomes increasingly blurred.
The festival selection of transmedia storytelling works will focus on theconscious use of multimedia or multiplatform functionality, with anemphasis on critical, reflective and creative or innovative achievements, that, either directly or through specific poetics and approaches, deal withquestions of the present moment. Either through traditional, analogue, ordigital, mobile media – and through combinations of these.
We are interested in outstanding examples of creative, authorialachievements positioned outside of instrumentalised usage for currentideologico-political or commercial purposes. Not that we intend to ignore that segment of creativity, but, rather than turning the spotlighton it – there are already platforms in existence at least in part for thispurpose – we wish to establish a point of reference for critical discoursethat enables reflection on the quality and importance of the todayincreasingly common concept of transmediality, which remains mostlyunreflected. Reflection on the field is very important from the widerpedagogical perspective and also from the position of self-awarenessand the understanding of the media environment of society as a whole, among other things.
