The work consists of approximately seven separate pieces of the main grid, which is 3D-printed from PLA plastic. The individual pieces assemble together into the main grid, which lies horizontally on a bed of sand. In certain spots, vertical “stems” of translucent resin emerge from the sand, winding through the main mesh in some areas in a way that is perpendicular to the main grid.
Grids is the result of thinking about networks and the uneasy relationship arising between its internal elements. Grids function as emergent phantasms. Because their logics are entirely composed of their individual elements, it becomes considerably harder to determine both their boundaries and the site of their emergence. This state of indeterminacy extends into an ambivalent relationship of interdependence that this same logic determines – networks enable the emergence of elements while simultaneously determining them, yet at the same time they delimit the direction of their development and their possible functions within its logic. Just as there is no clear boundary between an element and the structure that articulates it within the system – a structure that itself exists only as a consequence of interdependent processes between elements –, so too there is no clear causality to their morphology or purpose. Softness and rigidity are equally responsible for the fragile homeostasis of the system. Guiding and guidedness oscillate between states of symbiosis and parasitism.
Blaž Miklavčič is an artist and VFX designer based in Amsterdam (NL). The primary focus of his artistic research are simulation of organic and biomorphic systems, and the aesthetics of horror and science fiction. He studied fine arts and sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design at the University of Ljubljana. His work has been presented in various exhibitions at venues such as Aksioma Project Space, Škuc Gallery and Plaza Protocol, as well as festivals like IFCA – International Festival of Computer Arts, Maribor (SI), and CTM Vorspiel, Berlin (DE).
