You are welcome to visit the pop-up stalls whose mutual rivalry will define the city’s futures: the Reality Checkpoint, hailing from the world of Capitalist Realism, and the Eutopian Bazaar, rooted in something called Commonism. At these stalls, visitors can engage in a marketplace of ideas by acquiring, selling, trading or exchanging generative collectible futures. While the Reality Checkpoint offers investments in the perpetuation of the status quo, the Eutopian Bazaar invites you to disrupt it.
As an initial welcome, you will receive a free collectible future in the form of a physical card. You have the option to offer up your own ideas towards new futures, earning tokens to spend at either kiosk for more (and rarer) collectibles. The currency also allows one to sell ideas to one stall and invest by purchasing at the other, or in other ways explore the tensions, contradictions and gray zones between the two ideological poles. In the same vein, the installation encourages spontaneous trading of futures and tokens among visitors and hopes to foster experimental encounters throughout the festival. And don’t forget—hold onto your future(s) as you’ll have the chance to activate them during the performative gameplay of Game-Changers: The Game during the opening weekend of MFRU.
