Just before the release of sophomore album my dreams are only nightmares, m preis is gathering bits of years long research on water, pain and nightmares, to present in a before unheard collage of sounds. They have dived deep into the topic of water working with two austrian performance directors, Florentina Holzinger (Ophelia's Got Talent) and Natalie Assman (Danube Requiem), gathering knowledge about ecofeminist principles, theory, myths and science on the topic. Pain has been a main topic of their intermedia practice for a decade and it was only matter of time when and how it will integrate more directly into their music - besides an already big array of disruptive, painful and highly emotional sounds they've been extracting from harps, complemented by the use of pedal effects, the DAW and percussion elements, they have added the use of voice, which proved to be the most effective way to directly transfer the feelings of pain. Over the last couple of years, they have been researching sleep and sleep disorders, nightmares and alternative methods of musical notation, evolving a unique position between the personal, public and professional, which results in a completely unique musical approach.
Urška Preis, aka m preis, is a composer, harpist, visual artist and writer. They are currently researching dreams, nightmares and other sleep disruptions. Their main instruments are acoustic and electric harp, with a tendency of extracting uncharacteristic sounds from them. Their debut album “bare” was released by Kamizdat Records in autumn 2018 under moniker rouge-ah. After a change of moniker to m preis they are scheduled for a sophomore release in early fall 2026 with the Swiss record label -OUS.
They and the electronic music producer Tine Vrabič – Nitz formed the II/III, they’re also a member of Rok Zalokar’s fluid ensemble Zhlehtet and the four-piece experimental noise group Sujevera. Preis’ audio work has often been commissioned for numerous art pieces and since 2022, they have been collaborating with choreographer and filmmaker Florentina Holzinger. In 2023, they co-authored the performance installation Area of Weaved Space with Lučka Centa and Tery Žeželj at Glej Theatre (Ljubljana). In 2024, they were part of the performances Fears & Affections (Zürich), Forma 02: Wall (Berlin) and Not a very subtle image, but a persistent one (Berlin).
