too_much is a living book of short poetry, that is created in the form of tattoos on poet’s and performer’s Dejan Koban’s body. For this occasion, he has got seventeen original poems, by seventeen Slovenian poets, written on his skin. He presented it to the public live at the ŠKUC gallery in Ljubljana in June this year. During his life performance in Maribor, he will present five new poems.
too_much explores the relationship between words, songs, meanings, their stretching, or contraction, possibly even blurring over the years. The author turns his skin into paper in this project. Too_much addresses the problems of permanence, regret, responsibility. This specific performance will only end with the author's death. After death, the author will donate his skin to the Slovenian nation, specifically the Museum of Modern Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art Metelkova in Ljubljana, to arrange the poems and connect them into a real book, which will be published in only one copy.
The event also features other participants: Urška Preis, a spatial layout; Gaja Naja Rojec with an original film of the creation and tattooing songs; Nela Poberžnik with a video installation; Urša Majcen with three videos and placement of her own poetry in space; and Nežka Struc with an installation of small statues named Kobanček. The following poets are authors of the five new tattoos on poet and performer Dejan Koban’s body: Helena Zemljič, Nina Medved, Tonja Jelen, Nina Flisar, and Tibor Hrs Pandur. They will also perform.
The project has come to life in collaboration between MKC Letter (MKC Črka) and Media Nox Gallery for the IFCA festival.
Production: MKC Maribor and Dejan Koban, 2021
The MKC Letter program is supported by the Municipality of Maribor and the Office of the Republic of Slovenia for Youth. The event is also a part of a series of literary events supported by the Slovenian Book Agency.
